Description

The Buddha Skahyamuni Thangka- Tibetan Art

The Buddha Shakyamuni is depicted doing meditation in the thangka. He sits atop a moon disc lotus seat surrounded by several beautifully colorful flowers. His right hand is in an earth-touching mudra, while his left-hand carries a bowl. The vivid halo illuminated his face and the blue nimbus surrounding him under the exquisitely adorned parasol. The offerings underneath the Shakyamuni Buddha make this thangka more exquisite.

Shakyamuni Buddha is the historical Buddha, the originator of Buddhist philosophy, and is commonly referred to as "the Buddha." In the Buddhist religion, each "Kalpa" (a Buddhist eon) is considered to have its own Buddha, whose teachings gradually fade until the next Buddha arrives. He is believed to have lived around 420 BC and spent most of his time preaching the teachings of Dharma. The Life of Buddha Thangka depicts his life in detail. He is regarded as a role model, mentor, and inspiration. The "dharma," or spiritual belief, and the "sanga," or Buddhist community, are said to secure his presence on Earth.
