Kagyu Protector, Mahakala Bernagchen Thangka In Nakthang Style

Our artist has portrayed this beautiful Kagyu Protector Mahakala Benagchen Thangka in traditional black and gold settings. This tradition is also called Nakthang in Tibet. Cloak of Darkness Mahakala has a single face, three-round bulbous eyes, and a wide gaping mouth with white clenched teeth. Like flames, his gold beard, eyebrows, and hair flow upward. A curved flaying knife with a vajra handle is held aloft by the right hand. A white blood-filled skullcup is held to the heart by the left. He wears a large black cloak as his distinguishing feature, adorned with a crown of five dry white skulls, earrings, bracelets, and a garland of freshly severed heads.

Bernagchen is the personal guardian of the Karmapas, the leaders of the Karma Kagyu lineage, in this form of Mahakala. He has two arms, and his name means 'The Black Cloak.' The practice was established into the Karma Kagyu tradition by the 2nd Karmapa, Karma Pakshi (1206-1283 CE). The training comes from the Nyingma lineage's Revealed Treasure or Terma tradition. Mahakala Bernagchen is also thought to be one of the Karma Kagyu lineage's unique guardians.
