The Tantric notion that emotions are irreducible components of the psyche underpins Simhamukha practice. Enlightenment, according to the Tantric view, is not a passionless state devoid of mental and emotional substance, because it is impossible to maintain a state devoid of ideas and feelings. Instead of attempting to eradicate them, a Tantric practitioner strives to alleviate the associated suffering by learning to observe each emotion as it emerges and refraining from adding mental overlay. It is possible to acquire awareness in the midst of an intense emotion, recognize the attachment that is producing the agony, and demolish the illusions that are fueling the attachment.
