Description

The Four Friends | Harmonious Brothers

The Four Harmonious Friends is a Thangka-based narrative that aspires to express a life lesson. Our Artist created this Thangka in a professional creative manner. Four friends form an acrobatic pyramid beneath a banyan tree to get to the fruit. The creatures are represented in two ways: segregated into their respective habitats on the one hand and joined in harmonic collaboration on the other.

These four harmonious animals depict the four terrestrial habitats: sky (bird), tree (monkey), ground (elephant), and underground (hare). The banyan tree is known for its fruit-bearing tree. Buddha related this entire story to the Tittira Jakata parable of "Honoring of Age."

"Once upon a time, three companions, a bird, a monkey, and an elephant, lived beneath a large banyan tree. Their mutual admiration had dwindled. So, to figure out who was the most senior of them all, they started talking about the age of the banyan tree where they used to live. The elephant began by recounting his childhood when the tree was simply a little bush.

The monkey then explained how the tree was only a bush when he was a child. The birds then told them he had swallowed the initial seed and how the banyan tree grew from his droppings.

As a result, the bird was deemed the oldest, followed by the monkey and finally the elephant. So, throughout the animal kingdom, peace reigned once more.

Buddha explained that his teacher Maudgalyayana was an elephant, Shariputra was a monkey, and Buddha himself was a bird in a past incarnation. This fable included the hare, known as Buddha's eldest pupil, Ananda. As a result, Ananda was ranked second in seniority because he was the first to notice the tree when it was a leafless sapling. As a result, age would confer priority."
