Tibetan Buddhist Deity Of Compassion, Four-Armed Chenrezig, Thangka Art

The Thangka art of the Tibetan Buddhist deity of compassion is magnificently portrayed with stone colors and 24K gold. The four-armed Chenrezig, illustrated by our artist, is seated on a lotus seat in this thangka. His first two hands, palms together, are clasped around his heart, carrying a wish-fulfilling stone. The third hand on his right is holding a crystal rosary, representing knowledge. The fourth hand on his left holds a lotus, which means compassion.

Avalokiteshvara embodies the bodhisattva's determination to delay attaining Buddhahood until he has assisted every sentient being on Earth in achieving freedom (moksha; literally, "relief") from pain (dukkha) and the cycle of death and rebirth (samsara). His name has been translated as "the lord who watches in all directions."
