Ksitigarbha | Tibetan Bodhisattva of Mahayana Thangka Painting

Ksitigarbha is a Mahayana transcendent Bodhisattva. This Thangka was painted in the Karma Gadri style by our artist. He sits atop the moon disc on a lotus seat in a serene and peaceful expression. His face is illuminated by a light crimson aura that engulfs him. The offering is on top of a lotus leaf that appears to be floating on water.

In East Asian Mahayana Buddhism, Kitigarbha is one of the four principal bodhisattvas. He is usually represented with a shaved head and monk's robes in Buddhist iconography. He bears a tear-shaped jewel in his left hand and a Khakkhara in his right, which is meant to warn insects and tiny animals of his approach so that he does not hurt them accidentally. He is frequently depicted standing on a lotus base, representing his liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Kitigarbha's face and head are idealized for his elongated ears and other buddha characteristics.
