Description

Hand-Painted Thangka Of Mahakala Bernagchen, The Black Cloak

The wrathful Mahakala Bernagchen is the main protective deity of the Kagyu order. His name literally means the Black Cloak. This thangka is done in traditional Karma Gadri style, which is a major painting style from Kham, Eastern Tibet. The real beauty of this tradition is, it focuses on the central figure which gives space for the central deity to stand out. Also, the subtle colors and the minimalistic composition makes this thangka even more special.

Sometimes the power of great compassion is required in order to break the iron-grip of our obsession of what us considered solid, actual, essential, self or soul. The Archetype icon is, as a matter of fact, a portrayal of the model power that comes from inside oneself and is tackled to beat that self image. Despite the fact that one might perceive the self image to be a false, unbelievable construction, one is nevertheless primordially deeply loathe relinquishing the idea of its existence supporting us. So Mahakala, the archetype and defender, can be of fundamental assistance, similar to a fearsome ally, assuming one decides to take up war with one's inner self and negative viewpoints in the process of opening up the Buddha-nature, which is the non-ego, non-self, non-soul, unadulterated and all-knowing "clear light" nature of all beings.
