Kalachakra the Union of Bliss and Emptiness: Kalachakra Tantric Deity | Tibetan Thangka for Spiritual Power
The traditional Tibetan Buddhist art piece, a Kalachakra Tantric Deity thangka, is intricately hand-painted by a Nepali artist on a durable cotton canvas using acrylic colors and 24K gold. This cotton surface ensures longevity, allowing the detailed artwork to shine, while the acrylic paints vividly express the deity's divine energy. Highlighted with 24K gold, sacred features such as the halo and adornments symbolize enlightenment and spiritual illumination.
Kalachakra has four faces and two legs. His front face is blue with bare fangs symbolizing anger, his right face is red embodying attachment, his left is white symbolizing a peaceful state, and his rear is yellow symbolizing calm abiding. Each face has three eyes. His blue face is wrathful. He is adorned with many jewel ornaments, such as earrings, bracelets, necklaces, crowns, bangles, anklets, and so on. He wears a tiger skin. Of his 24 arms, 12 are on each side. The first four arms are black, the middle red and the last four arms are white.
The first of the black arms embraces the consort and wields a vajra; the second, a sword, the third, a trident, and the fourth, a cleaver. The first of the right red hands holds a flaming arrow, the second, a long-handled vajra hook, the third, a Damaru, and the fourth, a hammer. The first right white hand holds a wheel, the second, a sword *(Sanskrit: kunta ), the third, a jeweled stick, and the fourth, an axe.
In the depiction of Kalachakra, various symbolic objects are held by his multiple hands. His black arms hold a vajra, sword, trident, and cleaver, while his red hands wield a flaming arrow, vajra hook, Damaru, and hammer. His white hands grasp a wheel, sword, jeweled stick, and axe. The left black hands carry a bell, shield, Khatvanga, and kapala; the red hands hold a bow, lasso, precious jewel, and white lotus; and the white hands clasp a white conch, mirror, iron chain, and Brahma’s head.
Kalachakra's consort, Vishvamata, is depicted in the pratyalidha posture with four faces—yellow, white, black, and red—and eight arms. She embraces Kalachakra and holds a vajra hook, Damaru, rosary, kapala filled with blood, lasso, lotus, and precious jewels. Together, they symbolize the union of wisdom and compassion.
Kalachakra represents more than a deity; it is a comprehensive teaching and tantra with its own Mandala, texts, mantras, meditation, and rituals. Its practice leads to profound spiritual realization and integration of its teachings.
