Description
Niguma, Yogini of Vajrayana Buddhism
Dakini Niguma is an important Yogini in Vajrayana Buddhism, most recognized for her teachings on the Six Yogas of Niguma. She is revered as the Lady of Illusion, guiding practitioners to insight and spiritual liberation.
Niguma is depicted in accordance with traditional Tibetan Buddhist iconography, seated on a sun disc and a lotus seat, symbolizing purity and enlightenment. She wears a skull crown, representing the transcendence of ego and worldly attachments. In her right hand, she holds a damaru (a small, two-headed drum), symbolizing the sound of emptiness and the rhythmic beat of creation and dissolution. She also carries a khatvanga (a staff associated with tantric practices), which signifies her mastery over the union of wisdom and compassion. In her left hand, she holds a skull cup (kapala), filled with nectar, representing the transformation of negative forces into spiritual power. Together, these elements portray Niguma’s enlightened state, embodying wisdom, compassion, and the mastery of illusion.

Note: Niguma Thangka is an original painting from Enlightenment Studio located at Boudha Stupa.
Niguma is considered one of India's most critical and influential yoginis and Vajrayana's 10th or 11th-century teachers. She was a Dakini and one of the two female founders of the Shangpa Kagyu school of Vajrayana Buddhism and Dakini Sukhasiddhi. Like many Mahasiddhas and Mantrayana practitioners, Niguma was known by several names during her lifetime and afterwards. She was called Yogini Vimalashri, or Vajradhara Niguma, or Jñana (wisdom) Dakini Adorned with Bone (ornaments), or The Sister referring to her purported relationship with the great Buddhist teacher and adept Naropa.
