Shakyamuni Buddha Thangka:
Shakyamuni Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, is revered as the historical Buddha and the pivotal figure of Buddhism, whose life and teachings form the cornerstone of the faith. Born into a royal family in Lumbini, in present-day Nepal, Siddhartha renounced his privileged life in search of spiritual truth after encountering the realities of aging, sickness, and death. He embarked on a profound spiritual journey, practicing asceticism before ultimately meditating under a Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, where he attained enlightenment and became the Buddha ("the awakened one"). Central to his teachings are the Four Noble Truths—acknowledging suffering, its causes (craving and ignorance), cessation of suffering (Nirvana), and the Eightfold Path leading to the cessation of suffering.
In the Thangka, Shakyamuni Buddha is depicted in a specific meditative posture, seated with legs crossed in the lotus position. His right-hand touches the earth (Bhumisparsha Mudra), symbolizing his enlightenment and victory over Mara (the demon of illusion). His left-hand rests in his lap, holding a bowl (alms bowl) symbolizing simplicity and detachment from material desires.
Additionally, Shakyamuni is accompanied by his two chief disciples—Shariputra and Maudgalyayana—in Thangka paintings. They symbolize the early Sangha (community of monks) and the transmission of Buddhist teachings from the Buddha to his disciples.
Thangkas of Shakyamuni Buddha serve multiple purposes in Buddhist practice and ritual. They are used as aids for meditation, offering a focal point for contemplation and invoking the qualities of enlightenment. Devotees display Thangkas in homes or temples as objects of veneration and as educational tools, visually representing key aspects of Buddhist iconography and teachings. This Shakyamuni thangka can be used for offerings, prayers, and homage to the Buddha and his profound teachings.
