Traditional Suryagupta’s 21 Taras, Sacred Feminine Buddhist Art
Suryagupta’s 21 Taras hold a unique and revered place in Tibetan Buddhism, as this lineage provides a profound understanding of Tara’s transformative energies. The 21 emanations of Tara are specifically detailed, each representing a distinct quality and action to aid practitioners in their spiritual journey. These forms extend blessings of compassion, protection, wisdom, and swift action, tailored to address the diverse challenges faced by sentient beings.
In artistic representations of this tradition, the 21 Taras are often depicted in detailed thangkas, with Green Tara as the central figure, surrounded by her 20 emanations. Each emanation is distinguished by specific postures, mudras (hand gestures), and attributes such as lotuses, weapons, or other symbols, which signify their unique functions.
