Artist Prem Lama, a senior artist with over 30 years of experience, hails from Ramechhap and took 4 months to complete this exquisite thangka, which was collected in 2008.
Avalokiteshvara, also known as the Bodhisattva of Compassion, is one of the most revered figures in Mahayana Buddhism. His many arms, each holding a different symbol or tool, represent his limitless compassion and his ability to assist sentient beings in distress. His eleven heads symbolize his ability to perceive the suffering of all sentient beings. These heads are stacked in layers, with the tenth being wrathful. The right hand holds a lotus flower, which represents wisdom and compassion, while the left hand holds a mala, which represents the continuous cycle of samsara. The two central hands are joined (anjali mudra), expressing reverence. He has eight arms in his lowermost layer, each holding various ritual objects such as a bow, arrow, and damaru drum.
In this thangka, Avalokiteshvara is surrounded by key figures, including Green Tara, the protector and savior goddess of swift action; White Tara, the goddess of healing and longevity; Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion; and Mahakala, the fierce protector. Together, these figures contribute to the Mandala's powerful symbolism of protection, compassion, and spiritual enlightenment, making it an essential representation of Buddhist ideals. The Traditional Thangka of Avalokiteshvara Mandala is a magnificent visual representation of the divine, with vibrant colors and intricate details. The mandala format enhances the spiritual experience, serving not only as a beautiful piece of art but also as a powerful tool for meditation and devotion. When placed in a serene and sacred atmosphere, this thangka invites viewers to contemplate the wisdom and compassion of the depicted deities.
