The surrounding realms (human, semi-god, god, hell, hungry ghost, and animal) represent different states of existence in Samsara. The outer circle of the Wheel illustrates the twelve connections of dependent origination, showing how suffering arises and endures in the cycle of existence. From ignorance to aging and death, these links reveal how attachment, desire, and ignorance extend pain. Yama, the Lord of Death, firmly holds the entire wheel, reminding us of life's fleeting nature. The Buddha is depicted outside the wheel, pointing toward the Pure Land, which signifies the potential for freedom from Samsara and the pathway to Nirvana.
