In a thangka painting, Manjushri is shown as a young man holding a lotus blossom in his left hand to indicate his purity and compassion and a sword in his right hand to represent his capacity to cut through ignorance and delusion. He is frequently portrayed riding on a lion, which stands for courage and sturdiness.
