Introduction To The Thangka :
Tibetan Calendar Hand Painted with 24k Gold This Thangka is used as an instructional tool and auspicious talisman. The stylized astrological chart brings good fortune to all those who possess it, see or display it. The painting is a collection of astrological, calendar, and primary element symbols. The central image is of a yellow tortoise - emanation of the bodhisattva Manjushri. It's lying on the back with the head to the top and the four limbs extended holding sticks with frogs.
In the center of the round flat belly is a circle of nine variously colored squares containing the 9 magic numbers. Surrounding, on a black wheel against an orange background, is the 8 trigrams (Tib.: par Kha ge) of Chinese origin. The outer circle contains the 12 animal figures namely: Hare, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog, Pig, Mouse, Bull, and Tiger which represent the 60-Year Cycle. The symbols of the planets on both sides of the special numbers are used to represent the days of the week. The sun, moon, eye, hand, arrow, kaya, sheaf, and the head of a bird represent Rahu or Obstacles.
How to take care of your thangka?
-Hang your thangka in a traditional silk brocade
-Regular Inspection of your thangka; examine the borders and all attachments.
-Keep thangkas covered when they are on display but not in use.
-Rotate thangkas between display and storage on a regular basis, two to four times a year, to reduce the amount of exposure to light. Keep away from sunlight and humidity.
-Do not apply liquids or other materials to the surface of the thangka.
