Tibetan Vajrabarahi Thangka
Vajravarahi, also known as Dorje Phagmo in Tibetan, is a prominent deity in Vajrayana Buddhism, revered for her fierce compassion and transformative power. She is an embodiment of Vajrayogini, the supreme female Buddha, and represents the dynamic, liberating energy that cuts through ignorance and leads to enlightenment. Vajravarahi is often depicted in her red form, symbolizing passion and the intensity of spiritual transformation. She is typically shown with a sow’s head either as an adornment or protruding from her own, signifying her ability to eliminate all obstacles and delusions.
Vajravarahi stands in a dancing posture on a corpse, which represents the subjugation of ego and ignorance. Her right hand usually holds a curved flaying knife (kartika), symbolizing the severing of negative emotions, while her left holds a skull cup (kapala), filled with the nectar of wisdom and bliss. The flames of wisdom often surround her, depicting the burning away of all hindrances on the path to enlightenment.
