Pure Land Buddhism is a holy religion devoted to the Buddha Amitabha—"Infinite Light Buddha." It is one of the most widely practiced Mahayana Buddhism in East Asia. According to Pure Land schools, all those disciples who invoke Amitabha's name with a sincere devotion will ensure reincarnation in Sukhavati, the Pure Land, or Pure Realm. The Amitayus-vipayana-sutra ("Discourse Concerning Meditation on Amityus"), as well as the "bigger" and "smaller" Pure Land sutras (Sukhvat-vyuha-sutras ["Description of the Western Paradise Sutras"), are the origins of the Pure Land belief. Buddha tells the story of Amitabha in the larger Pure Land sutra. Many eons ago, as a monk, he learned from the 81st Buddha about the glories of innumerable buddha lands, and he vowed to create his buddha land, making it 81 times more excellent than all the others and drawing into it all creatures who invoke his name. This sutra says that in addition to calling on Amitabha, one should acquire virtue and concentrate on enlightenment. On the other hand, the blessed land is not a reward for positive deeds in the smaller Pure Land sutra but is open to anyone who invokes Amitabha at the hour of death.
