Introduction to Thangka

Guru Padma Sambhava, popularly known as Guru Rinpoche, the precious teacher, was a powerful Tantric Buddhist Master. He subdued many harmful spirits and forces that hindered the spread of the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni. His miraculous powers taught many disciples who became perfect masters of Tantric Buddhism. He is said to have twenty-five great disciples who were instrumental in preserving the sacred teachings of Lord Buddha to the present day.

Guru Rinpoche, or precious teacher, is known as Padmasambhava - the 'lotus born. Known as the second buddha who propagated the Buddhadharma throughout Tibet, he is considered the complete embodiment of all Buddhas of the three kayas. To benefit numerous beings and spread the Buddhadharma during the age of decline, Guru Rinpoche spread many hidden treasure teachings throughout Tibet and within the minds of his students. These were later discovered as termas.
