Introduction To The Thangka :
Garuda, a Hindu protective deity, is half bird, half man in this figural wall hanging, handpainted in Nepal.
According to Hindu belief, Garuda is a mythological bird, half human half bird, serving as a vehicle for Vishnu. He is the king of birds and is a descendant of Rishi Kasyapa and Winata, one of the daughters of Daksha. He is the mortal enemy of the snakes, a trait he inherited from his mother, who had quarrelled with another wife of her husband, namely Kadru, the mother of the snakes.
Garuda's rays are so bright that the gods mistake him for Agni (God of Fire) and worship him. Garuda is often depicted as having the head, wings, tail and snout of an eagle, and the body, hands and feet of a human. Whiteface, red wings, and golden-coloured body.
How to take care of your thangka?
-Hang your thangka in a traditional silk brocade
-Regular Inspection of your thangka; examine the borders and all attachments.
-Keep thangkas covered when they are on display but not in use.
-Rotate thangkas between display and storage on a regular basis, two to four times a year, to reduce the amount of exposure to light. Keep away from sunlight and humidity.
-Do not apply liquids or other materials to the surface of the thangka.
