Namtoshe is a central figure in Tibetan Buddhism, embodying the qualities of wealth, generosity, and spiritual protection. Often depicted as a powerful deity, Namtoshe is revered for his ability to remove obstacles and bring blessings of prosperity to practitioners. Alongside him are the five Dzambhala figures—each representing a different aspect of wealth and abundance—whose presence in this thangka symbolizes the harmonious balance of material and spiritual prosperity.
At the center of this composition is Namtoshe, also known as Vaishravana, the protector of wealth and prosperity. The Five Jambhalas, each symbolizing different aspects of protection and abundance, surround him. Yellow Jambhala signifies generosity and wealth, while Red Jambhala (accompanied by a consort) embodies love and harmony; Black Jambhala alleviates obstacles; White Jambhala embodies purity and healing; and Green Jambhala advocates for spiritual development and equilibrium. The Buddha Ratnasambhava, an embodiment of generosity and serenity, is positioned at the apex of the Thangka, whereas Bodhisattva Vajrapani, representing the ability to overcome challenges, is placed directly below. The skillful use of gold highlights the divine presence of each figure, beautifully capturing intricate details and expressions that bring this thangka to life.
