His hair is straight up, and his expression is calm and seated in a meditation posture. He is known as "Marpa the Translator" due to his extensive translation work. He studied with a variety of notable Indian teachers, including Jnanagarbha and Kukuripa, and received Naropa's teachings for many years. He resided with his wife Dagmema and their two boys and spent several years translating Buddhist writings from Sanskrit to Tibetan. During his second trip to India, Naropa foretold that Milarepa would be Marpa's principal disciple in the future.
