He studied with a variety of notable Indian teachers, including Jnanagarbha and Kukuripa, and received Naropa's teachings for many years. After practicing and mastering the instructions, Marpa returned to Lhodrag in south Tibet. He resided with his wife Dagmema and their two boys and spent several years translating Buddhist writings from Sanskrit to Tibetan. During his second trip to India, Naropa foretold that Milarepa would be Marpa's principal disciple in the future. Marpa traveled to India for the third time to study with the master Maitripa and got the definitive and complete transmission of Saraha's Mahamudra lineage.
