Masterpiece Enlightened Siddhartha Gautama Buddha | The Eternal Guide Across Time
Contemporary Eri-style painter Chhewang Lama completed this magnificent painting of Tathagata Shakyamuni Buddha. This painting features typical Eri-style elements, including gorgeous pale blue skies, symmetrical compositions, and exquisite decorative details such as clouds and flowers. The coloring and shading of the clouds give the distinctive feature of dark holes called “cloud-eyes” in the center, a highlight of the Eri-style painting tradition.
On top, the Sambhogakaya of the deity of Longevity – Buddha Amitayus, is flanked by the two Buddhas of the Past (Dipankara) and the future (Maitreya). Two beautiful celestial beings float gracefully above the clouds with their long scarves floating. They hold offerings of flowers and fruits in their hands. Buddha Shakyamuni is depicted here seated on a white moon disc upon a peach-colored lotus, supported by an ornately decorated throne carried on the backs of a pair of lions on each of its four sides.
The painting depicts Shakyamuni Buddha with a radiant complexion, seated in a Vajra posture on a lotus throne. He wears traditional red robes intricately adorned with 24-karat gold flower motifs and holds a blue alms-bowl decorated with pearl-like garlands. His right hand rests in the earth-touching gesture, symbolizing enlightenment. At the same time, his serene aura is surrounded by soothing blue and green hues enriched with gold linings, precious stones, floral patterns, and a rainbow motif. The composition features two white elephants adorned with floral brocades, with blue lions standing above them, their flowing manes adding an elegant touch. Above the lions, a mythical Sharabha symbolizes strength, perseverance, and speed. The throne, its adornments, and intricate detailing emphasize the painting’s spiritual and artistic depth.
Overall, this painting is a rare find that can be appreciated by both practitioners and collectors alike.
