The intricate brushwork conveys the essence of the deity's strong and spiritual energy, and the silky texture of the cotton canvas makes the colors shine. The natural depth of the canvas enhances the thangka's visual impact, and the use of acrylic colors guarantees bright colors that bring Mahasiddha Udilipa to life.
Often referred to as the "Bird Man" or "Flying Siddha," Udhilipa, the seventy-first of the eighty-four Mahasiddhas, is a lesser-known person in Tibetan Buddhism. According to the mythology of Abhayadatta, Udhilipa was a Devikota royal who pursued all worldly pleasures after carrying out some humanitarian deeds. He once dreamed of being able to fly after witnessing a swan fly across the sky. During his visit to his mansion, the Mahasiddha Karnaripa taught him the Caturpitha-mahayogini-tantra, which told him to visit twenty-four sacred locations and collect elixirs from dakinis to acquire the ability to fly. Udhilipa became known as the "Flying Siddha" after mastering the technique and achieving the siddhis of flying and mahamudra-siddhis after twelve years. The locations he visited correlate to important chakras in tantric practice, and his journey represents the merging of spiritual and bodily mastery. Udilipa is depicted sitting in a meditative position, surrounded by delicate, flowing designs of flowers and leaves that symbolize his enlightenment and spiritual development. This thangka guides practitioners toward enlightenment and transcendence and is a potent reminder of the transformational potential of spiritual practice.
