The mandala is a symbolic portrayal of the universe and every one of the valuable offerings that are held inside it, is pictured as totally unadulterated and offered to the Buddhas.
According to Buddhist cosmology, our world is flat, surrounded by a large mountain in the middle, Mt. Meru, four continents, each with two large subcontinents and many other small subcontinents. There are billions of such worlds, and when offering a mandala, we imagine offering these billions of worlds to the Buddha as the Pure Land.
To get the benefits out of our actions, we must make a tribute with a pure heart. We must sacrifice in the right manner, free from greed and eight worldly cares. Therefore, providing a mandala is a very powerful way to accumulate many benefits.
