Shakyamuni Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, is the historical founder of Buddhism. Born into the royal Shakya clan in Lumbini (in present-day Nepal) around the 5th to 6th century BCE, he renounced his princely life in search of a solution to human suffering. After years of meditation and ascetic practice, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, becoming the “Awakened One.” From that moment, he became known as the Buddha, or “Shakyamuni” — meaning “Sage of the Shakyas.” He spent the rest of his life teaching the path to liberation through the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. His teachings form the foundation of all Buddhist traditions.
