Sakya Mahakala Thangka

Sakya Mahakala also popularly known as Gonpo Panjarnatha is the most popular Protector in the Sakya sect. Mahakala is celebrated and placed among the heart of every Sakya practitioner within the Tibetan Himalayan community.

Mahakala Panjaranatha holds the wooden gong, skull bowl, and vajra-chopper. He was already popular with the Nyingmapa lamas and was probably central for the Indian adepts both as a protector and an archetype buddha deity. His Panjaranatha form became especially important for the Sakya order. This form seems to have a connection with the myth wherein Mahakala promised Shakyamuni Buddha himself that he would always protect the monastic community. The wooden gong (Gandi) he holds was used since most ancient times to summon the monks and nuns to assemblies.

For the Vajrayana practitioners, this Thangka will be helpful to inspire in your practice. Small in size it can easily fit into your shrine. Or you can carry on if you are a frequent traveler and do not want to miss your daily practice.
