Santarakshita was a renowned Indian Buddhist scholar and abbot of the great Nālandā University in the 8th century. Invited to Tibet by Emperor Trisong Detsen, he played a key role in establishing the monastic tradition and philosophical foundation of Tibetan Buddhism. Santarakshita is credited with introducing the Madhyamaka (Middle Way) philosophy and integrating it with tantric practices.
