Traditional Buddhist Thangka of Buddha Shakyamuni, The Enlightened One
Hand-painted on fine cotton canvas, this magnificent Shakyamuni Buddha Thangka depicts the peace and depth of the Enlightened One. With its exquisite details and well-balanced arrangement, this thangka, which was made in the renowned Karma Gadri style, exemplifies the beauty of Tibetan skill. While 24K gold accents create a gentle, brilliant light and the use of genuine Lhasa stone colors adds an earthy, natural brightness, the Buddha's spiritual presence and timeless wisdom are further enhanced.
Buddha Shakyamuni is portrayed with a radiant yellow body, which represents the illumination of his wisdom and the purity of his awakened personality. He is seated on a moon disc on a lotus seat, symbolizing his transcendence of material attachments and the purity of his teachings, which bloom within the hearts of all beings. His right hand creates the Bhumi-Sparsa Mudra, or Earth Touching Gesture, which represents the moment of his enlightenment, when he asks the Earth to witness his pledge to become Buddha and his victory over Mara, the powers of illusion. In his left hand, he carries a monk's bowl, symbolizing his modest demeanor, connection to the monastic life, and kindness in offering alms to others. His Ushnisha, the cranial bump on top of his head, represents his extraordinary wisdom and spiritual attainment, while his elongated earlobes reflect his renunciation of worldly riches and attachment to material wealth, as well as his ability to hear the cries of suffering beings and respond compassionately. These aspects combined represent the Buddha's road to enlightenment and his embodiment of wisdom, compassion, and liberation.
Buddha Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, is revered as the enlightened teacher who attained full awakening under the Bodhi tree. Born as Siddhartha Gautama in ancient India, he transcended worldly attachments and suffering to discover the path to enlightenment, known as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. His teachings, centered on wisdom, ethical conduct, and mental discipline, continue to guide millions on the path to inner peace, compassion, and liberation from suffering. Shakyamuni Buddha embodies the potential for enlightenment within all beings, inspiring individuals to seek wisdom, practice mindfulness, and cultivate compassion for all sentient beings.
