Deities of Longevity
Amitayus, White Tara, and Namgyalma are the three long-lived deities. Each deity possesses unique abilities that devotees aspire to use. They are highly revered and practitioners perform rituals and ceremonies chanting their mantra for longevity.
White Tara, Mother Of All Buddhas
White Tara, known as Sita Tara in Sanskrit, is revered as the mother of all Buddhas in Tibetan Buddhism, symbolizing the maternal aspect of compassion. Her all-white appearance signifies purity, the flawless truth of Dharma, and immaculate insight. She is associated with longevity, healing from physical and mental illnesses, and removing obstacles on the path to enlightenment. In Tibetan, she is called 'Drolma Karmo' or 'Drolkar' and is one of the primary longevity deities alongside Amitayus and Ushnishavijaya.
White Tara Mantra:
"Om Tare Tuttare Ture Mama Ayuh Punya Jnana Pushtim Kuru Svaha"
Amitayus, The Deity of Infinite Life
Amitayus is revered in Tibetan Buddhism as the sambhogakaya manifestation of Amitabha Buddha, known as the Buddha of infinite life and brightness. His practice focuses on promoting longevity and spiritual merit among practitioners. He is often depicted in Thangka paintings and sculptures in the Dhyana (meditation) mudra, symbolizing deep meditation and spiritual attainment. Amitayus holds the "vessel of immortality" in his right hand, containing the nectar of long life, referred to as "amrita."
Mantra of Amitayus:
"Om Amarani Jiwantiye Soha"
Namgyalma
Namgyalma, also known as Ushnishavijaya in Tibetan Buddhism, is a prominent long-life deity belonging to the Kriya Tantra school. She is revered across all major Tibetan Buddhist lineages for her ability to grant longevity and ensure rebirth in higher realms. Namgyalma's practice focuses on ceremonial invocation rather than meditative disciplines, emphasizing her role in purifying karma and protecting devotees from negative influences.
Namgyalma Long Life Mantra:
“Om Bhrum Soha Om Amrita Ayur Da Dai Soha”
