Buddhist Divine Four-Armed Chenrezig | Bodhisattva of Compassion
The Divine Four-Armed Chenrezig, a beautifully hand-painted thangka made on fine cotton canvas with rich acrylic colors and 24K gold, is a stunning representation of compassion. The gold ornamentation is inlaid with precision, adding warmth and depth to the composition and enhancing its spiritual presence. This thangka features the famed spiritual triad beside Chenrezig—Manjushri and Vajrapani—positioned as attendant deities to illustrate the whole path of enlightenment. Vajrapani, who embodies enlightened power, and Manjushri, who represents ultimate wisdom, appear alongside the primary deity as complementary forces, underscoring that compassion must be safeguarded by strength and guided by wisdom.
Chenrezig, known as Avalokiteshvara, is the Bodhisattva of Boundless Compassion and one of the most beloved figures in Mahayana Buddhism. According to sacred tradition, he vowed never to attain full enlightenment until all sentient beings were freed from suffering. This profound commitment shaped his divine form and made him the eternal listener to the world's cries. In Tibetan Buddhism, Chenrezig holds exceptional importance and is regarded as the spiritual source of compassion and the patron deity of Tibet. His mantra and imagery are central to devotional practice, meditation, and the cultivation of loving-kindness.
In this thangka, Chenrezig is depicted seated gracefully on a richly ornamented lotus throne, symbolizing purity arising untouched from worldly suffering. His four arms express limitless compassionate activity: the central hands join at the heart (Anjali Mudra), holding a wish-fulfilling jewel, while the remaining hands hold a crystal mala and a lotus, representing continuous prayer and awakened purity. Manjushri and Vajrapani appear beside him in refined, dynamic forms, reinforcing the harmony of compassion, wisdom, and power within the composition. The balanced layout, intricate floral background, and radiant gold accents reflect the high quality of traditional Nepali craftsmanship.
