About 2,500 years ago, Shakyamuni Buddha, originally Siddhartha Gautama, was born in Lumbini, Nepal. Raised like royalty, he was shielded from pain and death. After encountering old age, illness, and death, he left his royal life to explore suffering. After years of meditation under the Bodhi tree, he attained enlightenment and taught the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, the foundations of Buddhism. His teachings guide millions toward wisdom, morality, and mental discipline. This thangka depicts Shakyamuni Buddha meditating peacefully, symbolizing enlightenment with a serene expression, graceful gestures, elongated earlobes, a halo, an ushnisha, and the Bhumi-Sparsa Mudra.
