Mandarava Tibetan Thangka Painting
Mandarava's birth had been foretold by the Buddha's disciple Kashyapa, and she was to be a manifestation of the wisdom body of Vajravarahi, endowed with all the qualifying marks. Mandarava had reached the age of sixteen and had already ordained as a nun when she first met Guru Padmasambhava. From the moment she set eyes on him, unshakable trust and confidence welled up from within. Instinctively, the princess knew that he was a great teacher and invited him to her personal quarters in the palace to receive teachings. Sitting at the feet of Guru Rinpoché, the young Mandarava and her attendants received teachings and empowerments in the profound and secret Vajrayana. Upon receiving these initiations Mandarava became both disciple and consort to the Mahaguru.
It was at Maratika Cave that Guru Rinpoché and Lhacham Mandarava achieved immortality. Here they met with Amitayus, Lord of Infinite Life, face-to-face. Through this momentous connection of Guru Padmasambhava and Mandarava, they accomplished unending life.
