This Sacred Altar Enlightenment Chorten is a handcrafted Buddhist sculpture created by Gangaram Maharjan, an artisan with over 20 years of experience in traditional Himalayan metal craftsmanship. Made in 2022, the stupa features a copper body enhanced with a refined gold-plated finish, highlighting the intricate carvings across its stepped base, decorative panels, central structure, and upper spire. The detailed ornamental work, carefully arranged proportions, and refined finishing reflect the patience and skill involved in creating traditional Buddhist sacred objects.
The Enlightenment Stupa represents the Buddha’s attainment of enlightenment and the awakened state of wisdom and compassion. Each element of the stupa carries symbolic meaning, with the stepped foundation representing the gradual path of spiritual development, the central structure representing the enlightened mind, and the ascending spire symbolizing the progression toward awakening. The small Buddha image placed within the central niche further emphasizes the connection between the stupa and the presence of enlightened awareness. Before Buddhism, great teachers were buried in mounds. Some were cremated, but sometimes they were buried in a seated, meditative position. The mound of earth covered them up. Thus, the domed shape of the stupa came to represent a person seated in meditation, much as the Buddha was when he achieved Enlightenment and knowledge of the Four Noble Truths. The base of the stupa represents his crossed legs as he sat in a meditative pose. The middle portion is the Buddha’s body, and the top of the mound, where a pole rises from the apex surrounded by a small fence, represents his head. Before images of the human Buddha were created, reliefs often depicted practitioners demonstrating devotion to a stupa.
