Handmade Sacred Wheel of Life | Buddhist Spiritual Art Reflecting Samsara’s Truths
A Sacred Wheel of Life Thangka depicts Buddhism's unfathomable cycle of existence, with a magnificent image of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara and Buddha Shakyamuni at the top. The Wheel of Life represents the path of beings trapped in samsara, bound by karma, delusions, and the cycle of birth, death, and reincarnation. This thangka, featuring Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (the embodiment of compassion) at the top, emphasizes the path to liberation and the significance of compassion in conquering suffering. Avalokiteshvara's peaceful and compassionate presence serves as a reminder to acquire wisdom, compassion, and the determination to liberate all beings from suffering.
The three delusions of ignorance, desire, and wrath are symbolized by a pig, snake, and rooster in the center of the Thangka, indicating the underlying causes of suffering that trap beings in the samsara cycle. These delusions stem from ignorance, which traps beings in a cycle of pain. As you walk outward, you will notice the Six Realms of Existence, which include the Human Realm, God Realm, Hell Realm, Animal Realm, Hungry Ghost Realm, and Demi-God Realm, and represent the many stages of existence and mental torment.
At the summit of the Thangka, Buddha Shakyamuni offers divine guidance, representing the ultimate aim of enlightenment. The Buddha's figure depicts the route to liberation, teaching about impermanence, suffering, and the Eightfold path, which leads to freedom. The 12 Links of Dependent Origination, which surround the Wheel of Life, represent the chain of causality that causes suffering. These teachings help us comprehend that suffering is not innate, but rather the result of our attachments and ignorance, which can be overcome through the transformational wisdom of the Buddha's teachings.
