Surrounding this is the second ring, which signifies the law of cause and effect, or karma. The darker half of this segment represents the results of negative actions, leading to suffering and lower states of being, whereas the brighter half reflects the outcomes of virtuous acts, which elevate existence to higher realms.
The larger section of the wheel represents the six realms of existence: animals, hell, semi-gods, gods, humans, and hungry ghosts. Through the human realm, the Buddha taught that individuals can transcend suffering and attain freedom, creating a path for spiritual practice and growth. Each realm symbolizes unique states of being. The wheel's outermost ring illustrates the twelve links of dependent origination, demonstrating the origins of suffering and ways to cease it. These links reveal the interconnectivity of life, showing how ignorance, attachment, and craving contribute to our cycle of suffering, leading from ignorance to aging and death.
