Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, is widely revered as the “Precious Master” who introduced Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century. In this thangka, he is portrayed seated on a blooming lotus, which symbolizes his miraculous birth from a lotus in Lake Dhanakosha. His right hand holds the vajra, representing unbreakable wisdom, while his left hand cradles a skull cup containing the nectar of immortality. Against his shoulder rests the khatvanga staff, symbolizing his tantric realization and union of wisdom and compassion. His expression exudes compassion and power, embodying his role as a spiritual protector and teacher.
The background features the Karma Gadri style with soft hills, rivers, and monasteries symbolizing Dharma. Swans swim beneath him, representing purity, while blooming lotuses around his throne highlight the enlightenment. Ritual offerings at the base—jewels, vases, sacred tools—signify devotion and merit.
