Traditional Damaru | Himalayan Ritual Instrument

This drum features a rounded turquoise-covered surface that forms one of the two resonating heads. The wooden body is shaped into the traditional two-sided hourglass form, representing the union of wisdom and compassion, as well as the cyclical nature of existence. The center section is decorated with an ornate silver-toned band featuring engraved patterns and embedded coral and turquoise ornaments. The sides are finished with colorful cords and beaded attachments, while the lower section mirrors the upper structure with a balanced curved form. The leather drum membranes are carefully stretched over both ends, allowing the instrument to create its distinctive rhythmic sound. Attached to the sides are traditional Damaru tails, which move with the motion of the drum and enhance its ceremonial appearance. Every element, from the gemstone decorations and handwoven cords to the Damaru tails, carries symbolic meaning within Himalayan Buddhist traditions.

This Damaru is used during Vajrayana Buddhist rituals, meditation practices, and ceremonial prayers. Practitioners use its rhythmic sound during mantra recitation, deity practices, and Chöd ceremonies to support concentration and ritual expression.
