Description
Hand-Painted Traditional Thangka of 21 Tara | Mother Shyama Tara
In twenty-one enlightened forms, the Traditional Thangka of 21 Tara is a brilliant celebration of divine feminine compassion. The fast savior Green Tara is seated in the center of this sacred composition, surrounded by her emanations, each of which stands for plenty, healing, protection, and brave action. In the elegant Karma Gadri tradition, this thangka is hand-painted on fine cotton canvas using natural mineral pigments from Lhasa, embellished with 24K gold, and finished with a protective coating. It is a spiritual symbol that evokes bravery, dispels barriers, and awakens compassionate insight; it is more than just a painting.
The 21 Taras have their roots in the Vajrayana and Mahayana Buddhist traditions of antiquity, when Avalokiteshvara's empathetic tears gave rise to Tara. According to sacred writings, she promised to attain enlightenment in female form and to tirelessly strive for the liberation of all beings. Her twenty-one forms, each addressing a specific fear or challenge—whether danger, illness, emotional distress, or spiritual obstacles—were described in praise accumulated over decades by Tibetan gurus. Every shape bears a distinct vibration of enlightened activity, from the blessing-giving Varada Tara to the longevity-extending Ushnishavijaya Tara. The 21 Taras, recited daily for protection and prompt assistance, have become an essential part of Tibetan spiritual life. This thangka depicts Green Tara seated on a lotus and moon disc, one leg extended, symbolizing active compassion. Her emerald body, gestures of generosity, and the blue utpala flower signify purity. Surrounding her are twenty other Tara forms with varied colors, mudras, and attributes, set within a luminous landscape.
