Buddhist Wheel of Life (Bhavacakra) Mandala, Spiritual Journey of Samsara
The Wheel of Life Bhavacakra Thangka serves as a profound and symbolic depiction of samsara, representing the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. This sacred artwork vividly portrays the essential teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, helping us grasp the essence of existence and the journey toward liberation. Crafted with acrylics and genuine 24K gold, this Thangka encapsulates the profound lessons of impermanence, suffering, and enlightenment, making it a perfect enhancement for your meditation space or altar.
In the middle of the Wheel of Life, three animals: a pig, a rooster, and a snake symbolize the mind's three poisons: ignorance, anger, and attachment. These delusions are the root causes of suffering, ensnaring beings in the cycle of samsara. The depiction of these animals illustrates that all suffering arises from these fundamental mental afflictions, and with spiritual practice, one can overcome them. The outer circles of the Thangka represent the six realms of existence: gods, demigods, animals, hungry ghosts, hell beings, and humanity. Each realm illustrates the results of actions, the various levels of suffering, and the constraints faced by beings trapped in samsara. These realms embody the mental states and karmic actions that bind us to the cycle of birth and rebirth.
The Wheel of Life features a significant figure, Yama, the Lord of Death, who cradles the entire wheel. His presence starkly highlights the transient nature of all events, underscoring that nothing in samsara endures eternally. Beyond the wheel, the Buddha is portrayed pointing towards the Pure Land, symbolizing the possibility of liberation and escape from the cycle of samsara. This artwork highlights the ultimate goal of nirvana: liberation from suffering and the attainment of enlightenment.
