Description
Traditional Wheel Of Life (Bhavachakra) Buddhist Art, The Path to Nirvana
The Wheel of Life (Bhavachakra) Thangka is a powerful spiritual tool that illustrates the cycle of existence (Samsara) and the path to Nirvana. This Thangka, hand-painted with acrylics and 24K gold highlights, embodies the essence of the Bhavachakra, a significant Buddhist meditation mandala representing the eternal cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. It serves as both a meditation aid and a striking visual representation of Buddhist teachings.
In the center of the Bhavachakra, a pig, a bird, and a snake symbolize the three poisons: ignorance, attachment, and anger. These poisons illustrate the fundamental causes of suffering and how they bind beings to a relentless cycle of rebirths. Surrounding this core image, the second tier of the wheel reflects the karma of our actions. This visual is split into two parts, light and dark, showing the outcomes of both positive and negative deeds. The light section portrays the results of virtuous actions, which foster spiritual development and promote higher rebirths, while the dark section illustrates the suffering resulting from harmful actions, leading to rebirth in lower realms.
The third layer of the wheel depicts the six realms of existence: human, semi-god, god, hell, hungry ghost, and animal. These realms reflect the various states that all beings experience, influenced by their karma. Among these, the human realm is seen as the most favorable for spiritual practice, offering a path to awakening and liberation from Samsara. The outermost ring of the Bhavachakra illustrates the twelve links of dependent origination, representing the stages that entrap beings in the cycle of suffering and rebirth. Ranging from ignorance to aging and death, these links demonstrate how our desires lead to suffering and how we can attain liberation by releasing our attachments. The Buddha is depicted outside the wheel, indicating the Pure Land, symbolizing the possibility of escaping the cycle of suffering.
